Many creators start with a personal TikTok account and eventually switch to Business or Creator. But which account type is right for you?
Business Account vs. Creator Account
TikTok offers three account types: Personal, Creator, and Business. For serious creators, Creator and Business are the relevant options.
- Creator Account: Access to Creator Fund, livestream monetization, advanced analytics. Best for content creators who want to earn directly.
- Business Account: Access to TikTok Ads Manager, website links in bio, e-commerce integration, TikTok Shopping. Best for brands and businesses.
Setting Up a Business Account — Step by Step
- Open TikTok app → Profile → Three lines top right
- Settings → Manage account → Switch to Business Account
- Choose a category (Media, Education, Retail, etc.)
- Complete your profile: photo, bio, website link
- Link TikTok Ads Manager at ads.tiktok.com
What You Get with a Business Account
- Advanced Analytics: More data on audience, traffic sources, video performance
- Link in Bio: Clickable website link — personal accounts need 1,000+ followers
- TikTok Ads: Access to the ad manager for paid reach
- TikTok Shopping: Link products directly in your profile and videos
Downsides of a Business Account
Important note: Business accounts have restrictions on copyrighted sounds. You only get access to the Commercial Sound Library — much smaller than the creator library.
For pure content creators, the Creator Account is often the better choice. For brands and shops, the Business Account is essential.
